In the middle of the wilderness, we came across this stone fence, a remnant of the homesteads which were bought up to become the Smokey Mountain National Park.
Our path took us back and forth across streams...sometimes via a narrow "bridge," and sometimes via stepping stones. Always we could hear the music of the water.
Becky and her dh have been coming to this cabin for 20 years, and have marked in their wildflower book when they see each flower. Today we were able to find (and photograph!) a good many. According to the book, this Pink Lady's Slipper is a "memorable find."

Ladyslippers! I've read about them in the Mitford books. They're even prettier than I had imagined.
